What do we mean by “subscription?”
A subscription is an agreement between you and a company.
Subscriptions come in all shapes and sizes. For example:
- You can have a subscription to a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu (you agree to pay the service provider a set amount each month in return for access to your favorite movies and shows).
- You can become a paid subscriber with a retailer, like Amazon or Walmart (you agree to pay a yearly fee for access to their premium offerings).
- You can subscribe to a company that produces content, like the New York Times (you agree to pay a fee to access their articles).
You could even view utility payments as part of a “subscription plan” (you agree to pay your electric company each month to keep the lights on).
The common denominator in all of these examples is that you’ve agreed with the company in question. You pay them a recurring fee, and they deliver their products or services to you.
When do subscriptions get out of hand?
They get out of hand when you can’t manage them.
Keeping track of a few subscriptions isn’t always difficult. However, when your life is chock-full of subscriptions with streaming services, retailers, news outlets, specialty stores, and so forth, trying to manage them all can seem overwhelming. Just think: if you have 15 monthly subscriptions to manage, and spend just 15 minutes on each one, that adds up to almost 4 hours a month!
In addition, think about what could happen if a subscription plan’s terms change. If you’re focused on other subscription plans, and you’re set up on auto-pay, you could be spending much more money on the subscription than you realize.
Finally, imagine the hassle of having to cancel an old subscription plan and start a new one. (Maybe you don’t have to imagine — maybe you’ve experienced it.) It may seem like you’re jumping through hoop after hoop to cancel your subscription, but you’re not getting anywhere. Whether the problem’s root cause is a bad Internet connection or a busy customer call center, there’s no getting away from the frustration you feel.
If you can relate to any of these situations, then you already know what it’s like when subscriptions get out of hand — and it’s not fun!
